Custom sleep audio for shift workers & early starts
Made for falling asleep when the sun's already up.
Orvel builds a custom audio system for one person, after they order. A detailed brief — your schedule, your room, the noise you're up against and the sound you actually like — goes to a producer who mixes every track around those answers, then emails you the files inside 48 hours. No app, no library, no subscription required.
First thing that's actually built for a rotating roster. I fall asleep before my old playlist even finished loading.

The distinction
Everyone gets the same file. Yours is made for one person.
Same internet.Completely different product.
The state you're in
Your brain gets input all day.
Switching off isn't automatic.
Nobody's nervous system was designed for a shift that ends at 7 a.m., a phone that never stops and a bedroom that's full of daylight. By the time you lie down, you're not starting from calm — you're starting from everything that happened before it.
We can't remove the world around you. We can build something more intentional for the moment you're trying to leave it.
Orvel starts with sleep. The system covers the rest of the day.
Proof, not copy
Don't take our word for it.

Two finished Orvel soundscapes, unedited. Headphones recommended — the stereo field is part of the design. Both start quiet and develop; give them a few seconds.

Your intake changes the design decisions behind your track — its structure, its pacing, how much it has to mask and how far it drops. This preview exists so you can hear the direction of the product before you buy it.
What personalisation actually means here
We don't just ask what sounds you like.
We ask what keeps you awake.
A detailed brief after checkout — around twenty questions, five to seven minutes. Every answer changes a real production decision — not a label on a preset.
When your body is actually trying to sleep
Not a 10 p.m. bedtime. The hour you genuinely need to be unconscious by, on the pattern you genuinely work.
What's keeping you awake
A mind that won't stop after a shift is a different problem from waking up at 2 p.m. and not getting back down.
What your environment is fighting against
Daylight, traffic, thin walls, a housemate on a normal schedule. Your room is part of the brief.
What sounds you naturally settle into
Rain calms some people and irritates others. There's no universally correct soundscape, so we ask instead of guessing.
Whether it's headphones or a speaker
This one changes the engineering. Some of what we can do in stereo simply doesn't survive a bedside speaker.
Masking floor
How much continuous sound has to sit underneath the track to cover what's happening outside your room.
Soundscape and texture
The character you chose — ocean, rain, forest, deep tones, near-silence — built to hold up for hours, not 30 seconds.
Transition pacing
How long the opening settling phase runs before the track reaches its resting state.
Frequency direction
Where the low end sits, and whether a binaural layer is worth including at all for your playback setup.
Structure and length
Built for the window you actually have — a track for a 6-hour daytime sleep isn't shaped like one for a 20-minute reset.
We describe what we build. We don't claim precision we can't back up.
Where the evidence sits
Covering the noise is the part with real evidence behind it.
The most reliable thing sound does for sleep is unglamorous: it masks. A continuous, even bed of sound raises the floor of your room so that the door downstairs, the road outside and the neighbour's television stop arriving as separate events your brain has to evaluate. That's the mechanism we lean on hardest, and it's the one with the strongest support.
Binaural beats are the more interesting, less settled part. Play two slightly different pure tones — one into each ear — and you perceive a third, slow pulse that isn't present in either signal. Research has explored whether this supports relaxation, anxiety and sleep. Results vary, and the effect sizes reported are modest. We include a binaural layer where your playback setup makes it meaningful, and we don't build the product's promise on it.
What we won't tell you is that your brainwaves automatically synchronise to a magic number. The honest version: a well-designed soundscape, paced deliberately, mixed for your actual environment, gives your attention less to do. That's worth building carefully. It isn't worth exaggerating.

Brainwave frequency reference
A reference for the states these tracks are designed around — not a promise about what your brain will do.
Human production
Your answers don't disappear into an algorithm.
They become a production brief. A person reads it, makes the calls, builds the track and writes down why. You get those notes with your files.

Tell us what's off within 14 days of delivery and we rebuild the track once, free. If the rebuild still isn't right, we refund you in full — and you keep the files. You're buying a producer's time, so we'd rather spend it getting it right than argue about it.
Questions
The things people ask before paying.

No. There is no library and nothing pre-made. After you order, a producer opens a blank session and builds against your brief — your schedule, your disruptions, your environment, your sound preference. A binaural layer is one possible ingredient, included where your playback setup makes it meaningful. It isn't the product.
Because it's a production brief, not a lead-capture quiz. Every completed brief becomes a real build for a real person, so we only ask customers who've actually ordered. It takes five to seven minutes and starts the moment your payment goes through.
Headphones or earbuds get you everything, including the binaural layer, which relies on each ear receiving a slightly different signal — a speaker in the room can't do that. If you tell us you sleep with a speaker, we build differently: more emphasis on the masking bed and the low end, no reliance on stereo separation. Either way you get a track designed for how you'll actually play it.
You answer the brief — around twenty questions covering your schedule, the noise you're up against, and the sound you actually respond to — and it lands with a producer. Your tracks get built from it, and your MP3 + WAV files plus Track Notes arrive by email within 24–48 hours.
Yes — Subsurface and Deep Submersion are two finished Orvel soundscapes, playable in full on this page. They show you the sound world and the production standard. They aren't your track; yours gets built from your answers.
The intake asks about your specific pattern — nights, rotating, early starts, or long irregular hours — and the track is built around when you actually need to fall asleep rather than a fixed clock time. Because it's tuned to your pattern rather than to one calendar day, it holds up across a normal rotation.
Your tracks are not. They're a one-time payment, they're yours forever, and they never stop working. There is one optional add-on at checkout — Orvel Refresh — which sends you a fresh variant of your tracks each month, because ears habituate and a sound you've heard nightly for weeks stops registering. It's unticked by default, free for the first 30 days, then $15/month, and you can cancel any time. Skip it and nothing recurs, with nothing to cancel.
Yes. The MP3 and WAV are yours to keep and back up, licensed for your own personal use. You just can't resell or redistribute them.
No. Orvel is a wellness audio product. It isn't intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any medical condition, and it isn't a substitute for medical advice. If you think you may have a sleep disorder, please talk to a doctor.
